DESCRIPTION:McIntyre Hall Presents \nTrue Blues: Corey Harris & Cedric Watson \nFriday\, November 20    7:30pm \nHosted by Corey Harris\, a MacArthur Grant recipient\, and featuring renowned Creole/Blues musician Cedric Watson\, True Blues chronicles the extraordinary living culture of the Blues\, Cajun\, and Zydeco in an evening of music and conversation. \nCorey Harris is a guitarist\, vocalist\, songwriter and band leader who has carved out his own niche in blues. A powerful singer and accomplished guitarist\, he has appeared at venues throughout the North America\, Europe\, Brazil\, The Caribbean\, West Africa\, Asia\, Australia and New Zealand. He has recorded many old songs of the blues tradition while also creating an original vision of the blues by adding influences from reggae\, soul\, rock and West African music. With one foot in tradition and the other in contemporary experimentation\, Harris is a truly unique voice in contemporary music. \nCedric Watson is a four-time Grammy-nominated fiddler\, singer\, accordionist & songwriter with seemingly unlimited potential. Cedric has an apparently bottomless repertoire of songs at his fingertips and plays everything from forgotten Creole melodies and obscure Dennis McGee reels to more modern Cajun and Zydeco songs. Unlike many of his contemporaries\, he is also a prolific songwriter\, writing almost all of his songs on his double row Hohner accordion. They have played together since 2019\, when they were introduced to each other by Linda Melsted\, a leading figure in Seattle’s early music scene. Performing on period instruments\, the Odd Pearl Consort is on a quest to explore the vast repertoire of trio sonatas and chamber music by Telemann\, Bach\, Handel\, and other 17th and 18th century composers throughout Europe. They perform regularly in community venues\, retirement homes\, and house concerts throughout the region\, and present an annual Baroque Vespers program at Bethany Covenant Church in Mount Vernon. \nThe name “Odd Pearl” refers to the original meaning of the word “Baroque\,” which according to Merriam-Webster “came to English from a French word meaning ‘irregularly shaped.’ At first\, the word in French was used mostly to refer to pearls. Eventually\, it came to describe an extravagant style of art characterized by curving lines\, gilt\, and gold.” Hence\, the name Odd Pearl. \nThe intimate Masterworks Chamber Music Series takes place in the Studio Space at McIntyre Hall.
